Start with the plan’s lines of business, financial condition, and priorities. Look for evidence that the executive has connected medical-cost trends, pricing, forecasting, reserves, and capital needs to operating decisions. Ask what they personally changed, how they worked with actuarial and clinical leaders, and what the results were. Board communication and the ability to explain financial risk clearly should be evaluated alongside technical finance experience.
Define the business problem first: growth, a turnaround, operating improvement, or a leadership transition. Then examine the candidate’s actual P&L responsibility, team, resources, and authority. A strong interview should establish how the executive made tradeoffs among member needs, provider relationships, financial performance, and the organization’s mission. References should help distinguish the candidate’s contribution from results driven by the wider company.
Some leadership capabilities transfer; product experience needs closer examination. Compare the populations served, revenue model, distribution, provider network, and stakeholder relationships. Establish which experience must be present on day one and which gaps the existing team can support. A familiar employer or impressive title should not substitute for understanding the business the candidate actually led.
Use specific operating examples and consistent questions across candidates. Ask for the starting conditions, decisions made, measurable results, and lessons from setbacks. Explore how the executive worked with clinical, financial, operational, and technology colleagues. Targeted references should test those examples and clarify leadership behavior. The goal is evidence that relates to your organization’s needs, rather than confidence based on presentation alone.
